SMS (Short Message Service) is a text message service used by GSM and other mobile operator/carrier companies. Similar to paging, these messages are sent in a text form to and from your mobile device and/or in instant messaging systems like ICQ, MSNmessenger, and more. These short text messages can be constructed on your computer or a wireless enabled device where limitations drive creativity!
Typically, on mobile devices, such as cellphones, no more than 140-160 characters per message can be sent as a result of system limitations. SMS is convenient and cost effective way of communicating fora number of different reasons. When you compare it with the cost of air time for voice calls or wireless web access, SMS remains cost effective. Messages remain discreet, and you never get a busy signal! Because of these advantages, the SMS text message craze has caught on with youth and teens. Almost 1 billion messages are sent each day in Asia and Western Europe.
